Henri Rousseau

Henri Rousseau was a French post-impressionist painter known for his unique, dreamlike style and depictions of lush, exotic landscapes, despite never having left France. A self-taught artist, Rousseau worked as a customs officer before pursuing art full-time, earning him the nickname "Le Douanier" (the customs officer). His works, often featuring jungle scenes with animals and vibrant plant life, are characterized by their flat perspective, bold colors, and whimsical details. Though initially dismissed by critics, Rousseau is now celebrated for his imaginative vision and influence on modern art movements like Surrealism.
